E & J Gallo Winery

The world's largest winery proudly calls Modesto home and owns one quarter of all wine produced in the world! That's right, if you have four bottles of wine in your home, chances are at least one of them is a Gallo product. Gallo’s labels represent diverse and growing regions throughout the globe, range from jug wine to top shelf labels like Bran Caia and Clarendon Hills.

From its humble beginnings (Gallo was founded with $5,000 by the sons of an Italian immigrant who learned the technical aspects of wine making from pre-prohibition documents found in the basement of the Modesto library) the company has grown into a four billion dollar annual operation with over 5,000 employees in a wide variety of jobs – ranging from marketing to design, legal to science. In fact, Peter Cousins, who grew up in the area and started his education at Modesto Junior College before going to Stanford for a bachelor’s degree in biological sciences and then earning a doctorate in viticulture and genetics at UC Davis, leads the grapevine improvement program. Previously, he was a grape rootstock breeder and geneticist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Novo Technologies

Novo Technologies started in 2011 as Novo Consulting with two programmers providing customized software development for the health care industry. In four years, it has ballooned into a company with more than 30 employees, developing software for a wide range of applications and industries. In addition to attracting talent from outside the area, Novo has expanded its talent pool by attracting Modesto-area residents who previously commuted to jobs in the nearby Bay Area, as well as developing close relationships with local colleges and universities, like Modesto Junior College, CSU Stanislaus and UC Merced. Novo Technologies is working to expand their employment base and offerings, including the development of direct-to-market apps that would be produced for general audiences. In order to keep up with burgeoning demand for its services, Novo is anticipating expanding its employment base by as many as 25% in 2016.
